BATCH 10 TESTIMONIALS (Nov 13th–Dec 17th, 2022)

Amit Devale, Architect, Urban Design Research Institute, Mumbai

The Writing/s in Architecture course should be made a mandate in the syllabus. It has made me realise how ignorant we have been towards reading and writing in our profession. It has changed my perspective towards writing and made me realise there are various ways of writing and how we can choose from them basis our tastes and interests. It has also thrown light on the formalisation required in writing. This course has given me enough to make me think of writing as a professional and make a career out of it. Apurva has structured the course in such a beautiful way, I wish it went on for longer!

Prajakta Chakravarty, Principal Architect, Green Mango Design, and Associate Prof, SMEF Brick School of Architecture, Pune

The course was very intelligently curated. The vast and intense curriculum was broken down into smaller parts, deciphered and presented in a simple yet elaborate manner. The references and reading material were extensive and well-curated. I liked how intensive the course was, and I truly appreciate the tips, pointers and references we received in each session. I learnt a lot about formal writing, which has given me the confidence to go ahead and pursue it further.

Ruchi Raghuvanshi, Architect, Boston

It provided me with much-needed background and opportunities in the field. The doubts or any other issues were promptly solved by the mentor as well as the team.

As an experienced practitioner looking to pivot into academics, I was initially unsure if the course suited me. However, I was thrilled to see a batch of varied age groups and experience levels. The diversity, in fact helped me learn from others and offered perspective. The reading material was well curated to challenge advanced readers and spike curiosity amongst a younger audience. The course was structured well, conducted seamlessly, and encouraged participation. The assignment was the most exciting part, as it was a true test of the effectiveness of the course. Working on it really helped me subconsciously imbibe the teachings of the program. One-on-one mentorship with an esteemed instructor was very valuable and getting personalised feedback on the assignment was the icing on the cake. It really helped me evaluate my course of action and was a clear guide towards improvement.

Radha Iyer, Architect, Bengaluru

A very informed trainer with simplistic and clear delivery methods. Was a pleasure to seek exposure and engagement with her.

In a time where society demands change and institutions see writing as a subject of least academic obligation, this course reiterated its purpose and its much-needed relevance in today’s times. The structuring of the 6- week programme gave a clearer over-review of helping us envision a routine of a full-time architecture writing field. The start of the course acknowledges what makes diverse minds pick up on exposure to architecture writing. Beginning with studying the authors of history emphasized the importance of simplistic writing by taking pleasure in critiquing architecture and not criticizing it. Besides simplifying writing skills, outreach was another area that received much attention throughout the course. A study on publications and media houses, analysing the essence of each and understanding writing for varied target audiences, was a part of the course routine.

By grasping many new terms and theories, an added domain of understanding how these were relevant to their respective historical eras broadened our ability to comprehend an overall picture of a situation before writing on it.

This tutorship on journalism in architecture stood as an act of responsibility been picked up by choice. With each passing week, the need to initiate provocations or discourses with peers felt an essential. Through varied writing styles, and experimenting with different genres, architecture writing stood as an art that could be best mastered with constant explorations of learning, unlearning and relearning!

We realize this field as the light at the end of the tunnel rapidly approaching an entire horizon of a bright sky. A serious opportunity awaits to be unveiled. A big thanks to you Apurva ma’am for being a catalyst to help young minds like us realise the need to fasten our vigour to begin our travel on this less explored journey!

Safa Abdul Gafoor, Student, Eranad Knowledge City College of Architecture, Kerala

Architecture writing was a field I had very little knowledge about. In college there were opportunities to write different types of contents but there was little to no guidance available. The interest to find out more about writing for architecture was sparked by my faculty in the 5th year of my bachelor’s degree. And to my surprise, Ma’am had also enrolled for this course. So I had double the joy. I got to learn from my brilliant batchmates & legendary professionals who had a lot of experience in the field. It was an honour to learn under the guidance of Apurva ma’am.

Apurva ma’am trained us well with the right amount of interaction and exercises. Ma’am was very encouraging and approachable, which helped us share our thoughts and experiences without holding back too much. She has covered all aspects of the skill so well, that I now have a very clear and structured understanding of the field of writing in architecture.  I recommend the course all those who are interested in writing, and especially architecture students who are going to work on their final thesis. This course will definitely make a lot of the process easier.

Aathirai S.K, Architect & Faculty Member, Mohammed Sathak AJ Academy of Architecture, Chennai

Writing Architecture is as essential as design. it shapes the way of thinking and communicating. The architectural schools should have writing as a part of the curriculum throughout the course duration. The course was well structured and thought-provoking. Ar. Apurva emphasized the writer’s ethical responsibility and encouraged everyone to explore writing. The info-graphs used on the slides were impressive and innovative. The discussions led me to understand different perspectives and ethics in architectural Journalism. I enjoyed peer group learning, class exercises and assignments. Personally, this course has bridged the gap between the fear of writing and the desire to write.

Gandhali Dixit, Student, Sir J J College of Architecture, Mumbai

I learnt a lot from Apurva Ma’am and the way she guided us throughout the course. We could also learn from her personal experiences and opinions, while also interacting with the other participants. I think it was a good introduction and base into this field for me. The amount of learning we got on a person-to-person basis was very useful. The course was well structured where it didn’t become too much information or too easy to absorb.

Simran Kaur, Practising Architect and Postgraduate Student, IKGPTU Mohali

I enjoyed how the sessions were made up of segments of presentations and interactions. Abdul Raheem Khaja, Architect, Fourth Dimension Architects, Coimbatore

My first ever online course, and I was obviously sceptical about enrolling. In the end, it did not even feel like an online course. Apurva Ma’am is really welcoming and approachable, and that goes a long way. The course was very well-structured and was easy to understand and grasp. The effort ma’am took to patiently clear our doubts and make sure we understood the explained concepts really stood out for me. The course opened a whole new perspective for me, and I look forward to exploring more in the field. Thank you, Apurva Ma’am.

Having experience over a decade, I feel she is a walking library of knowledge in the architecture field. Thank you, Apurva Ma’am, and thank you, Acedge team.

Sunanda A.J.R, Architect, Mistry Architects, Bengaluru

I loved the course and the mentor’s involvement, passion and commitment. It was an inspiration, and I am glad to have enrolled for it. It opened up a lot of unexplored and enjoyable areas for me. The course itself was structured effectively, always alternating between interactive and course material. This was energizing and kept the interest alive for the 2.5-hour sessions, sometimes more.

Ms. Apurva has helped us gain a larger insight into the area of architectural journalism and left us with adequate knowledge that we can steer in the direction that we would like to take it. She is really passionate about the subject, and she gives the course students a lot of what she knows, and I really appreciate that. She, along with Acedge, has invested a lot of time and effort into the course. I am sure her efforts at giving architectural journalism a wider platform will make a huge difference both for a writer and the reader. I, however did miss interactions with fellow learners. To encourage this, maybe some group exercise could be envisaged, so we also learn from the other

The course has been highly informative and insightful with lots of fresh learnings. Apurva Ma’am is inspiring, patient and kind. Her meticulously detailed out course and references have been insightful. I didn’t know architecture journalism can be so vast. Earlier, I wanted to take architecture journalism part-time, but I am willing to consider it a full-time job due to her course. There are greater things to learn in it as one practices. I found myself lucky to be part of this course and got to know Apurva Ma’am through this. Articles/research papers and other reading material also enhanced my knowledge. Acedge provided us with an organized platform where we could systematically access our resources given by Apurva Ma’am. The whole course had a positive atmosphere. Apurva Ma’am and Athulya were polite and patient to us every time. These intensive courses can only be enjoyed when we have a cooperative environment that Apurva Ma’am and Athulya provided to us.

To be frank, I was really unsure before taking up this class. With the amount of time I took to decide on this, I missed registering for the first batch. 30 minutes into the first class and I was already glad that I took this up. The course is thoughtfully structured to introduce you to the larger aspects and genres of architecture related writing, and the details associated to each genre. It’s a perfect mix of theory and interactive sessions, both adding equally to the knowledge base of the learner. What I truly loved is that it gives you a foundation to understand writing by introducing you to the different aspects associated to it, in a manner that sets you free to think beyond, without limiting your thought process. This was one of the nicest things to happen in 2020.

It’s a free-think class that lets you grow, if I could put it that way. Additionally, the energy, knowledge and commitment that Apurva brings to this learning is exceptional. It was so much of fun and I was honoured to learn almost face to face from my Idol THE Apurva ma’am. I simply loved each and every assignment, teaching and discussions that happened in the six weeks. Every Saturday there was an excitement in me to attend to attend the course. Though it was a weekly session, but I felt that I was into the course the remaining days too. The course gave me a new perspective to look at spaces. Words do fall short in sharing my experience!

Athulya Ann Aby, Post Graduate Student, CEPT, Ahmedabad

This is a great course for anyone who is interested in writing about the built environment, but doesn’t know how or where to start. The course was very informative. The mentor gave a good comprehensive understanding of the scenario of architectural writing in India and abroad. She also gave detailed and constructive feedback on all our assignments. A special commendation for the exercises and the really good resources provided. It also opened my eyes to the different styles and genres within architectural writing itself. It was a great learning experience. Apurva ma’am’s dedication in giving relevant references, clearing all queries and giving detailed constructive feedback is the best part!Thank you Apurva ma’am!

Bharani Sri Gujuluva, Student, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore

The course was greatly eye-opening, and I strongly believe that it has laid a sturdy foundation for all my future pursuits in the field of architectural journalism. The emphasis on content and the way it was structured gave a wholistic view of the field. Beyond the knowledge directly shared, Apurva ma’am also did a great job in creating a space for likeminded people to share views and opinions on common topics, which I think is more important to any course. So, thank you ma’am for all that you have done.

Muzakkir G M Bijli, Associate Professor, MEASI Academy of Architecture, Chennai

This was my first online course and I was sceptical on how it would turn out but I found out it to be very interesting as we moved through the course. The way our mentor Apurva ma’am handled the course and the way the course content was packaged in sessions was very apt. Things that stood out in the course were clearing of doubts, if any, without any apprehensions and the reading material shared. Thank you to Apurva ma’am for being a wonderful and inspiring instructor and ACEDGE for creating the platform. One of the very few useful things I could say I did during the lockdown.

Garryn Stephens, Postgraduate student, University of Cape Town, South Africa

This was my first online course, and what a pertinent time to start! The course content of Architectural Writing is very relevant and undermined in Architectural Schools and Practice in South Africa. Being the only student outside of India, I felt very welcome! The content exposed me to the essential tools for a budding writer and the enthusiasm of both the mentor, Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta, the ACEDGE team, and the other students, was inspiring and humbling. Thank you, Apurva Ma’am, for the great opportunity to learn from you, and especially for your commitment and passion!

Neha Shetty, Recent Graduate (2020) from KLE Technological University, Hubli, Karnataka

Ananya Asthana, Architect at National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (Nrlc), Lucknow

I am extremely happy to have enrolled myself in this course and learning the craft of writing from none other than Apurva ma’am. She’s an inspiration and after taking this course I can vouch for the fact that she’s also a very good teacher. Ever so patient and sweet with everyone’s queries, she is a great mentor. The course was very well curated; each session was packed with so much information and learning and we’re all taking back something valuable. Thank you ma’am for being the best mentor.

Sonali Agarwal, Partner & Architect at Space and Vision, and Faculty at Chandigarh College of Architecture, Chandigarh

‘A beacon of light’ is what the ACEDGE-facilitated writing course meant to me, an architect hesitating at the borders of professional writing, waiting for some direction. The structuring of the course is sensible, and its rich content has helped expand my horizons vastly. A visually interactive mode maintains one’s interest and holds a lot of merits. The short course has instilled in me the confidence to follow my passion with renewed vigor. Kudos to ACEDGE on their mission of nurturing young creative minds in the field of architecture.

Drishti Joshi, Student, Raman Bhakta School of Architecture, Surat

The course was beautifully curated by Apurva ma’am, catering to almost all the aspects of architectural writing and journalism. Each session was loaded with so much knowledge and followed by a discussion with other learners. The approach towards conducting the course felt very personal with individual attention to everyone. Ma’am never hesitated in addressing our requests and questions. She looked at each of our assignments and gave her comments and, that was literally the best bit ever, to get one-on-one attention from the mentor herself!

A very insightful course with thought-provoking inputs from the mentor. I didn’t expect that apart from architectural writing, I would also get a detailed insight into the further opportunities in the field and learn about architecture as well! Ma’am’s feedback on the assignment helped me and boosted my confidence to write more and to write better, and gave me a better sense of direction. This was the best online course, and the best six weeks of the lockdown. Thank you, ma’am!

Anjali Purswani, Architect at Dsync Architects, Bengaluru

It definitely gives me more confidence to explore the field of architecture journalism further. Also, I highly appreciate the reading material and feedbacks shared by the mentor.

Isha Chaudhari, Recent Graduate (2020) from PVP College of Architecture, Pune

What I loved about the course was that there was a major weighted focus on reading as much as writing, if not more. Without the earlier exercises, the last assignment would have been hollower. And the articles selected were also extremely insightful. I think we’ll be leaving this course as better readers, if not writers.

Samruddhi Shendurnikar, Student, Dr. B.N. College of Architecture, Pune

She ensured that the entire experience was extremely engaging and interactive throughout. I enjoyed listening to the perspectives of all the learners during various discussions, which paved way for further thought. In a short span of six weeks, we were able to create connections with each other that we hope to maintain in the future. As the group was a mix of students, professionals, and teachers, we had a variety of thoughts and opinions during the discussions. It’s a great course to expand your viewpoints and broaden your horizon in the field of architectural writing. I would love to attend a part two of this course whenever conducted. Thanks to the entire team of ACEDGE, Ankita Arora our coordinator, and Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta for this wonderful and memorable experience.
